heart broken

Thanks to my sister Jenna, I’ve just had a good cry and my heart hurts right now.

Over a reality show.

Thanks, Jenna.

Jenna just had the A&E show “Intervention” on the television when I was just innocently trying to work on my rewrite. Now this show was emotionally brutal. It was the episode about a poor man named Bret.

Bret was an alcoholic with two children, a girl and a boy – just like me. The show was taping a family intervention where the people who loved him begged him to seek treatment – or they would be forced to cut him out of his life.

He was standing stony faced while his children were sobbing begging him to go – and he refused. It was almost impossible to watch. So sad. Finally, he agreed to go only when the family threatened to have him committed regardless based on a psychological profile.

Four months later, he died of throat cancer – that he got from drinking too much.

Thanks a lot, Jenna. So sad. Really. If you’re drinking too much, stop. Now.

Intervention gets me every time, too.

    I don’t think I’ve watched it when I haven’t cried.

But most of the time, it’s a happy ending; they get the help that they need and then end up leading healthy productive lives.

They are always heartbreaking, but it looks like you caught a tragedy.

I prefer my drama to be fictional, or historical. Actors, safely playing roles. Why would I want to subject myself to the pain of watching real pain, and feeling real embarrassment for how these people’s lives are spread across the airwaves?

I’ve seen ads for Intervention (I think it is even on Hulu, which is how I watch TV these days), and I have nearly no interest in watching it.

I could never watch that show, particularly an episode like that.

oh that was the intervention she talked about on facebook….sounds like it would jolt many people out of their self destructive patterns

i’ve seen many episodes of Intervention but that episode was seriously the saddest one yet!

I watch a lot of Intervention. That episode was so sad, but the kids were so glad he didn’t die an alcoholic! I have a lot of alcoholism in my family, and somehow this show gives me hope and shows me what love looks like.

Yes, Michele, you’re right. It was a better ending than it could have been. For sure. The boy saying that his dad died as a dad and not a drunk was very profound.

I think it’s definitely a show that can bring hope and show people real results of tough love and professional help; plus they do great great work with the people who are struggling specifically with addictions.

My husband loves Intervention (I’m an Obsessed girl), but I try to watch as little of it as possible because it’s just too sad. I did happen to watch Bret, though, and it broke my heart as well. To watch his kids screaming & begging & hugging was almost too much to bear ~ hurt for the kids & anger towards the father for being selfish. The kids seemed to be at peace with his death, so at least that’s something.

Tracy, I agree, it was definitely much better that they had the intervention, even though he died. At least he died with them knowing he did love them enough to try to kick this addiction.
