a day without an iphone
it’s strange how quickly I’ve incorporated the iphone into my life. Now that I’m without one, because of a incident that included a deep creek and me forgetting it was in my pocket, I find that I miss it. I miss being able to play music whenever I’m in the car. I miss being away from email all day. I miss being able to text a random thought to someone, or being reachable while I run to the store.
Losing or breaking an iphone is really a terrible thing, actually, from a financial point of view – especially when you’re not eligible for an “upgrade.” Right now I’m staring at the following choices prior to November 4th.
• Buy a “special pricing” iphone 3G (ie the last generation one) for $399 and no longer be eligible for the 3GS upgrade in November.
• Pay the “non-upgrade” price for the 3GS – $599.
• Buy a first generation iphone from a friend or ebay for between $150 and $200. (And take a significant step backwards speedwise.)
• Buy a 3G from eBay for $350-$400.
None of these are all that attractive, and really it “seems” so unfair because when you sign up it’s $199 and you get the fancy latest greatest. Darn the way subsidized pricing skews our perceived value.
I was going to pay for my older brother’s upgrade ($199) and then get his 3G phone. But he’s not eligible for another 2 weeks. Killer! I think I’ll buy a first generation iphone. Use it for 2 weeks. Sell it on ebay and recoup that cost. Then I’ll pay for my brother’s upgrade. Get his 3G. Use that until November. Sell his 3G, and buy the 3GS with my own upgrade pricing.
Complicated. I know. Why not just borrow a cheap phone for the next two weeks? Because I simply cannot stand using any other phone. They confuse and bewilder me…

You should get this phone: http://www.theonion.com/content/news/apple_claims_new_iphone_only
Wow..remember when
* You didn’t even have a cell phone
* You had a cell phone but never turned rendering it useless
So far you’ve come in your journey of technology
I can feel your pain, Jase…..want to come in for some inner healing?
Oops, that last comment was me—Mom–I’m using your computer conveniently located on our dining room table!—Mom
Jase–that is so sad! When I went and saw Oprah they confiscated my Iphone and it was amazing how strange it was to not have one just for a few hours, even! I hope you get one soon!
Now you know intimately my struggles for the past year! Oh, how I feel for you my friend! I can’t fathom having one and then not having one! It’s bad enough not being able to get one. I have a month left. A MONTH!
I left my iPhone at home and used a cheap cell for a month in Kenya. It was no iPhone, but it sure beat the alternative (ie what you are experiencing right now…. Total unreachability when you are out).
It is surprising how fast you remember how to click through those numbers to send a text.
Heidi – I know, it’s crazy! Until I had an iPhone I had no use for a cell phone. Now I don’t have a real phone line at all.
Collin – I never texted before I had an iPhone. I refuse to use those numbers! Seriously, I think I sent 2 texts ever.
i have nightmares of similar scenarios… it’s alarming how intregrated the device is into my life now… at&t totally screws us with the subsidity.
i can say from experience, ebaying iphones is really easy and there’s a huge market for it… i was able to ebay my first gen iphone (used for over 1.5 years) for $240! so you should have no problem ebaying the 3g later for 350-400…
i don’t know if this factors in at all… but at&t has good deals on iphone 3g refurbs right now.. $50 for the 8gb. detals here: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/941259?highlight_key=y&keyword1=iphone
