Upsetting the apple cart
Just when you’ve hit a comfortable groove, a wave comes and knocks you all on your head. Or something like that. In this case, the particular wave is in the form of Darby feeling sick. Poor girl, hunched over and nauseous. Not good. Add to that a layer of sadness because our visit from the famed Mam and Pap has come to a close, and things aren’t as happy in the old Latshaw homestead as they often are.
And also, as a goodbye dinner, we all excitedly went to Benihana in Santa Monica on Sunday. Bear in mind that this is Lyric and Ollie’s favorite restaurant, and we don’t go there often because it’s expensive. But it was a special occasion. At least, it was supposed to be.
Instead we got a full order of stress and that’s about it to fill our empty bellies. And how stereotypical, I know, but just like the famed Seinfeld episode we were mind-bogglingly told “10 more minutes” for a full hour, and our promised 30 minute wait time stretched into 90 minutes until we finally told them to cross us off the list and left. They knew we were hungry. They knew we’d been waiting forever. But all they would tell us was we were next on the list and continually seat others instead.
So that was sad too.
And then on top of that, the Phillies lost that night too. In a crushing fashion. And of course, what am I required to do after their terrible loss? Write comedy! Yeah, nothing like being forced to be funny when you feel like something in your stomach died.
But the Phillies won today, Darby will hopefully be feeling better in the morn, and we know that from now on it’s call ahead reservations or bust with Benihanas.
And the comedy outline I wrote is good, too.

I remember a professor from college saying that comedy is actually a higher form of literature than tragedy. Typically comedy has witticisms but it usually still has tragedy in it—just everything turns out well in the end. Where tragedy ends badly. No redemption.
The history of people is not a tragedy but a comedy because of God.
Aw, Jase–what a bust at Benihana!!! Did you guys at least sing the song? And did you respectfully quiet it down while passing a homeless man in the alley?
I really hope darby feels better soon!
that’s what happened when we went to benihana last time. and we waited so long that ollie fell asleep before we even got our food! ha poor buddy.
Oh, THAT is why Lyric with filled with “pure hate”. She said a restaurant let her down but it was too long of a story to tell. Poor kid.
